How to Brief a Freelance Digital Marketer (A Simple Checklist)

Hiring a freelancer can be the fastest way to get expert marketing help — as long as both sides start with the same picture. A good brief does not need to be long. It needs to be clear.

1. Your business in two lines

What you sell, who buys it and what makes you different. Include your website and social profiles.

2. The goal

Be specific: more enquiries, online sales, bookings, brand awareness or a launch. If you have numbers (current leads per month, target cost per lead), share them.

3. Your audience

Location, age range, interests and — most importantly — the problem your customer is trying to solve.

4. What has been tried

Past campaigns, agencies or tactics, and what did or did not work. This avoids repeating mistakes.

5. Budget and timeline

Separate the service fee from ad spend. A realistic range helps the freelancer recommend what is achievable.

6. Access and assets

  • Logo, brand colours and fonts
  • Photos and videos you are allowed to use
  • Access to Google Analytics, Search Console, ad accounts and social pages

7. How you will measure success

Agree on two or three KPIs and a reporting rhythm upfront. It keeps everyone focused on outcomes rather than activity.

With these seven points ready, most freelancers can come back with a useful plan and an accurate quote much faster.
